Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving we have quite a bit to be thankful for.  Mylee did a thankful picture at school and she included: her family as number one, her school as number two, the sun as number 3, Canada as number 4 and home as number 5. I find it quite funny that at 5 years old she can take an assortment of ideas and put it on paper but the meaning is so much more involved.

Sure she is greatful for her family, each and every one of us and you contribute to making her the person she is;  she is absolutely in love with school and I hope this never changes; the sun, well she will have to explain this one in detail one day; Canada, yes this may seem like a strange choice but she goes to school with children who have immigrated and have seen war and poverty and all the things that we hope children never experience; and home, well that is pretty self explanatory because it sits so well with family.

Kiya didn't do a project this year, I guess in grade 5 they just seem to forget that you have to take inventory of yourself sometimes and count your blessings.  When I do track her down and get her answers I will let you know.

And I am another story.  There are so many things I am greatful for in this world that numbering them, well the list would go on forever.  Everyday I thank whomever my higher power is for my husband and two amazing children, I thank him for having just enough to make me happy and healthy, and I ask that my friends and family have just enough for them to remain happy and healthy.  But the one thing I am always greatful for, even though sometimes I have my low days, I am always greatful that I can see the silver lining.  I always try to find the best in every situation, try to put a smile on someone's face who needs it or have them giggle just once at stupidity so that their low day could get a little brighter.  Lately I have had some pretty high days, did have one low one, but because of good people in my life who made me see the bright side I cheered up.

So I hope as you sit around your turkey dinner with whomever you are celebrating with this year, that you whisper on the air, or mumble into your mashed potatoes just what or who you are thankful for.  Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!! And have a big pile of potatoes for me!!

First Day of School

So exciting and sooooo about time.
This summer has been an interesting adventure but I am glad it is over, I just couldn't take the fighting anymore.  And I understand how both of them had felt, Kiya was wanting to do her own thing because she is 4 years older and Mylee just wanted someone to play with.

So off they marched with lunch bag in hand to their first days of Grade 5 and Senior Kindergarten!!!

Bubble Guppies

I was asked to do a 1st birthday cake with a Bubble Guppies theme, and well truth be told actually had to look this one up.  My kids are past the treehouse stage so I don't get to watch Cat in the Hat, or Toopy and Binoo anymore, can recite you all the songs but yeah, we don't watch them. So after much research and planning, here is what we came up with.

The CNE

I love the EX!

I can remember coming down to the CNE when I was a little kid, watching the people mover float over the sky, the loud noises of the games and the rides that would make you throw up.  And then there was the food building!

This year was the same, the kids stuff was awesome, the food was yummy and it was very, very loud. We normally skip a year between CNE's just so that it is a new experience when we go, I am not a fan of the "been there, done that" philosophy as you can always find something new in everything you do.  But this year they added some stuff that was quite interesting, and I am concentrating on the kids stuff....because well, that is why I go.

This year they had a My Little Pony show and face painting, and animals from Reptilia.  I didn't realize we had one in Vaughan so will have to make a trip out there one weekend.  The girls got their faces painted and a caricature done and then we went walking. After some fun and shopping,  we stopped to watch the Flying Welendas, a tightwalking troupe that was fabulous and quite brave. We stopped in at the magic tent along the way and learned some new magic tricks as well, and can't wait to try them out on everyone.   It was a great day, tiring, but great and the girls had fun.

Painting our nails

Remember how I said I was obsessed with nail polish?  Well here are some of the latest creations

Menchies

OMG we are so lucky!!!! Well maybe my waistline isn't but the girls and I were so excited that the new Menchies at Woodside is now open!!! We met the owner last week and she gave the kids stickers.  She is a nice lady, as we walked in she gave us coupons for a dollar off and everything.

For those of you who don't know what Menchies is I will try to explain.  Menchies is soft frozen yogurt that you serve yourself.  Stores have different flavours and you add your own toppings and how much of that topping you want, keeping in mind you have to pay for whatever is in your bowl.  They have the sauces and the fruit and just about everything you could put on ice cream into your bowl, except for pickles. Then your bowl is weighed and you pay per ounce.  So the girls and I can go in and it is about $10 for all three of us and it is a healthier treat than ice cream.

So sometime this week we might walk to Woodside for another bowl of Menchies!!! If you have never been, stop in at one and see what you think.  Will mention though Menchies is peanut friendly and there is cross contamination so just be careful!

Yum!!!!

Canada's Wonderland

There is something about watching a little kid's face light up when they see or experience something new.  Our day didn't start off on a good note, it was raining and we were questioning whether to actually go or not.  I looked at Darryl and said "well it can't rain all day, it hasn't this summer" so off we went, through the rain and walked up to the gates.

Inside we purchased ponchos so that we didn't get wet or sick, even if the rain continued they keep some of the rides open unless they see lightning.  So we waited, I took Gwen and Mylee with me to Snoopy Planet and the big kids Kiya and Jason stayed with Darryl.  Fifteen minutes into the Boo Blaster line and the rain stopped, the sun actually peaked out for a little while and off the big kids went on Leviathon.  I am so proud of Kiya, she is getting more and more brave as the years go by and that roller coaster is a doozy.

The girls and I stuck to the easy fun rides in the kiddie area, we ran from ride to ride and sometimes didn't leave the rides for another turn on it. It was quite and adventure watching Gwen, who had never been, enjoy everything that was going on.  And then guess what....

The sky opened up and it poured rain, I think I waded through some 6 inch puddles along the way.  Darryl called and said "Let's stop for lunch meet us at ..." and yeah dragging 2 kids with me we walked back to the gate to go find lunch.  Our feet were soaked but we made it a game, I mean why not, it wasn't cold and well we were getting wet anyway.

So the day progressed as always, and it didn't rain again after that second big shower so we had run of the place, no lines, no line jumpers, it was awesome!!! I am glad we went, and at the end of it all I was tired, Darryl had fun and the girls were passed out cold.

Big Summer Ticket

What an amazing adventure.  If you have never sat on the lawn at the Molson Ampitheatre I highly recommend it.  Even though this was a kid's concert, and that was primarily why we went, it was pretty awesome.

So our first chaotic mess was driving along the lakeshore during CNE, yep don't recommend that at all. Darryl dropped us off as close to the doors as he possibly could before I went crazy, and we left early.  We walked up to the gates, saw the crowd of people and well just stood and made friends with the others around us.  I have this habit of talking to random people in the line just to pass the time.  We met up with Sue and the girls, Auntie Nikki and Caden and Mackenzie, and Cecile and her girls and we took my little sister Gwen and all of us trekked up to the lawn area to find a seat.  And then we moved, it is not fun having a pole in the way of the people you would like to listen to.

And we waited, and waited, and well waited.  Then Eleven Past One came on and the girls and I started to dance along.  I really like these guys and so does Mylee, she was up bouncing along with her arm in the air having fun.   Then a short break when I went to get some popcorn, and met a really nice guy in the line.

This line was total and complete chaos, all I wanted was some popcorn and drinks and yeah they were really bad.  It got to a point where the guy behind me offered me his American Express card to go into the lounge and get free popcorn.  I considered it but then would have felt horrible if they charged him anything so I declined but we had a good laugh anyway, and can you believe they ran out of popcorn just before I hit the front.  Was still in line 15 minutes later when the popcorn showed up again.  So word of advice, if you want food there prepare to stand in line for an hour.

As a result I missed Victoria Duffield perform but heard her sing and watched the monitor they had at the snack bar.  I got back in time for Zendaya, which I think was the most that an artist was up there and sorry but I was done with her about 5 songs in, and I think most of our crew was too.

Then the big show, the one we wanted to see, R5!!!!  And the 2nd song in we were all dancing and singing along to one of the best songs from his new movie.  It was a tiring night for all of us and by the time we got home we were all ready for bed, thank goodness.  Our next adventure started early in the morning.

Busy Summer

Well it seems with all the comings and goings of family we have finally gotten into a routine ready for school.  That is after a week of adventures to round out the summer.  Next year I want to go away, for some reason the one trip balances out the boredom and refreshes us in a way that is unexplained.  We didn't get up to the cottage like we wanted, or out to visit more family because the timing just wasn't there, so why were we always so bored.

This is where I think I can narrow down two possibilities:

1.  Weather.  This year the weather has been so unpredictable it is sad.  The amount of cloudy, rainy, super hot, then really not so hot days were just ridiculous.  As a result planning was a little hard because summer is meant for outside and unfortunately, outside didn't cooperate.

2. No planning.  Yep this is a shocker because I am normally up to my eyeballs in plans and schedules and everything.  I have come to realize that this works for my family, well 3 of us anyway, and I need to keep sticking with it.  If I plan something we do it, if not we are looking for spontaneous things to do, and for those who know me....yah when have I been spontaneous?  I don't think my personality could handle it.

So because of these two reasons and because of who I am, I have decided that summer needs to have a plan, at least a goal for each week and stuff set up for in between so as not to create this boredom that I experienced this year.

The next couple posts are from our last week of fun when everything just kind of happened.

More Swimming

Another day of swimming at Grandma's.

Mylee is now used to the water and really enjoys the independence it brings to her.  Think I might be a little scared when she goes out to get her licence in 11 years.

And of course my water baby.  No matter what temperature the water is, Kiya seems to dive right in for a little while.

Embracing My Inner Teenager

Sunday July 28th was a day that I could let loose, forget the worries of being mom, wife, friend what have you and just be a kid again.  Yep that's right, I was one of many who got to attend the 2nd "The Package Tour" concert.  Though I am not a giddy little screamer like so many are I really enjoy live music, there is something about it that makes your heart pump faster, your energy level rise and well you get to jump around like a kid screaming and yelling with a bunch of other people doing the exact same thing.

Things I learned from this adventure:
1. Women are not very nice to each other.  The horrible looks I received as to how I was dressed or maybe it was my sparkling personality, but holy cow the statement "if looks could kill" was an understatement.  We sat in seats on the floor and there were a couple people in our row who were just plain miserable.  The people behind us were more chipper and fun so we chatted and danced with them.

2.  Do not wear heels to a concert if you need to walk a couple city blocks in them.  Granted, the pants I was wearing were too long for regular flats, by the end of the concert I was walking in downtown Toronto with no shoes on.

3.  When Boys2Men come back to Casino Rama, I am definitely getting tickets! In my opinion they were the best part of the show, granted I am not a huge New Kids fan.

4. To cheer on the Boston Bruins logo in the ACC is really, really naughty.

I did have an amazing time and would do it again in a second. Seats on the floor are totally worth the money they cost.  Though I could have done without seeing 98 degrees, I was really disappointed with them.

What is that?

So after a busy Saturday evening, we were cleaning out the fridge of leftovers and goodies and we found an interesting thing.  Karyn brought it for mom to try and we had our own little adventure trying to figure it out.

There were a stacked pile of these in a netting in the fridge.  So our first question was "what is that?"

Our answer, thanks to google and Wikipedia is a RAMBUTAN.  Please don't ask me to pronounce that because I wouldn't know where to start.

Second question was "how do we eat it?"  And this is where it got fun, and messy.  The key to "peeling" this fruit is to find the seam, squeeze to pop it open and then slide out the fruit inside.  It is a opaque clear fruit that is quite juicy and has a seed in the middle that you can't eat.  Someone told me it was like a lychee but I couldn't tell you, my lychee comes in a can.

Well this rambutan fruit was enjoyed by all of us, and I highly recommend it.  Next lesson though, how to pick the good ones at the store.

Sometimes We Have Just Had Enough

Darryl, Mylee and I went on an adventure the other day as Mylee was feeling a little left out amongst the cousins.  She is the youngest on her Dad's side and the others have at least a 4 year gap above her so including her in activities is difficult.  So I had to run out to get something and decided to take her with me.

Off to Sally Beauty supply we went.  Mylee is always excited to visit here because she gets to pick out a lipstick for herself and well....I go for the nail polish and nail accessories.  This adventure I was looking for one specific colour and didn't find it but did find a couple others....oops.

I try to include Mylee in all our activites but finding mutual fun for both girls is getting harder and harder.  Kiya is growing up into the hormonal age of "I just hate the world" and Mylee still wants to have fun and run around.  So I am now trying to spend some quality time with each girl separately, they are both so special and offer so much enjoyment in their own way. And in moments like this day it was hard to watch Mylee be upset, because really I understand both worlds.

So I snapped a quick picture of her driving Daddy's car as he had a work call to take care of outside the building (car is off, she is just sitting in the seat).

As you can see she is quite happy to be her cheeky little self!

Two Things a Woman Needs

...well in my opinion anyway. Or maybe I should change that to mother, I'll let you be the judge.

I truly believe that if I had a really good oven and a sewing machine I would be all set.  I have come to learn how to sew, and it is a big difference from the first time when I put a front pant leg and a back pant leg together and tried to put them on.  Yep I am just that good =).

I am also addicted to Pinterest and love some of the ideas that people come up with.  My mom sewed something for my sister and I liked it and wanted to copy it for Mylee but never had a sewing machine to do it.  Well last year for my birthday Darryl bought me one and it has been siting in the box for quite a while.  His mom was using it more than me.  So I decided to try something new, pillow case dresses.

Such an easy project, or so I thought, next time I really much read the instructions more carefully before I try something.  I had to run out last minute for bias tape to finish the dresses.  But I must say they came out pretty good.
This is Mylee's, I have misplaced the picture of Kiya's but it is somewhere.  My girl's wear them as nightgowns and I figure it cost me about $5 to make both.  Plus you can get pillowcases everywhere now.  I am so lucky my girls let me experiment.  Onto the next adventure....Pinterest here I come =)

Obsession

I have come to conclude that every woman collects something, something to do with fashion, be it accessories, earrings or other types of jewelry, shoes, purses, what have you.  I am one of these women, though I can tell you that my obsession takes up far less room, but an entire shelf in the bathroom closet.

Hi my name is Shannon and I am addicted to nail polish.  At current count the girls and I own 95 bottles of nail polish as well as several different nail accessories, including but not limited to stickers, sparkles, and gems.

Do we have a problem?  Maybe, or maybe it is the easiest way to teach the girls to take care of themselves.  We sit and do manicures for each other and get very creative when it comes to the polish.  Right now the girls have polka dots on their nails and it is quite cutesy.

So yes I am a nail polish addict but I wouldn't have it any other way.  Besides there are more colours to get still!!!

I learned Something New

My one goal in life is to never stop learning, I guess that is why I went back to school, and now I work in the school.  Everyday I try to learn a new thing, be it a new word, something my children teach me, or something I can do with my hands.

Over the past 6 months I have learned that a cocoon belongs to a moth while a chrysalis belongs to a butterfly, I have looked up the word precocious and now actually know its meaning, and just this past week I learned a new craft idea that I shared with my kids.

During a visit to the dollarama, looking for something specific that I can't remember right now, I came across a string bracelet craft.  Some people would call it cording, but there is another name for it.  It involves a split wheel and 8 pieces of string.

I had always wanted to learn how to do this method, as I know so many other friendship bracelet methods that my repertoire seemed incomplete.  So I picked up the kit and attempted to understand the instructions, which were just pictures no words, and then youtubed  it.  So much easier when someone tells you left up, right down, then quarter turn and do it again.

So I finished my little example and then Mylee wanted to learn.  She picked it up easy and then Kiya came over and wanted to learn.  And she has now done a couple.

Sometimes in life a simple little gesture can brighten someone's day.  A friendship bracelet can be kept forever and many people still cherish it.  On my last day of school I gave a couple of my little friends a 2 friendship pins, the ones with the seed beads on them, and told them that one is to keep and one is to give away to another friend.  It is the little things that matter and that are remembered.
This is one of Kiya's finished bracelets.

Swimming

Some people in our circle think I am hard on my kids, that my methods are tough and I have heard myself referred to as "The Nazi Mom".  I can accept this and probably agree with it.  I do tend to be harder on my kids because I know their limits and I know their capabilities.  If I have to be a little harder on them so they can over come their fear of something then that is what I need to do.

One example of this started this week, and it had to do with Grandma's swimming pool.  I haven't had a chance to go in this year because I didn't have time but Kiya and Mylee have been swimming a couple of times.  The water is up to Kiya's chest and Mylee wears a life jacket to be safe and strangle holds her sister's neck to keep afloat.

Well that is up until I got in the pool with them on Sunday.  I didn't think it necessary for Mylee to strangle her sister and showed her that with the life jacket she wouldn't sink or drown and that someone was in there with her all the time.  So I let her go.  I was within arms reach and through screaming and crying, and probably some horrible looks from neighbours, Mylee freaked out.  That is when I sat her on the ladder and told her that if she was going to freak out she had to get out of the pool because her freaking out will tell people she is in trouble.  She didn't want to get out.  So instead she gave it a shot.  I told her if she wanted me to pick her up she had to catch me.  Still within arms reach and still with the life jacket on I made her swim.  She was forced to kick her feet and with her arms do a breast stroke type movement and eventually she caught me.  I picked her up once and she wanted me to let go.  By the time I was ready to get out, Mylee had crossed the pool 6 or7 times solo and was playing tag with Gwen, who is also in a life jacket.

Some people might consider some of the things I do heartless, but until my children understand that only through many attempts will they reach their potential, I have to continue pushing them and cheering them on.  I have never babied my kids, maybe that is why they understand where mommy is coming from, so I can't start now.

So if you disagree with my methods, I can totally understand, but each day my kids learn something new and know to push themselves to the limit succeeding in their own way.  I am not one to push when it comes to grades, but when it comes to life lessons and things they need to carry with them their entire lives I am going to push until they understand for themselves why mommy does that.

Pacific Mall

Another day out with Auntie Selena!

This time we went for Vietnamese noodles, again I overate, and shopping at Pacific Mall.  The weather was so hot it was great to be inside for a day, and Shelley was able to join us.  Auntie Selena bought us all a little purse holder, one of the coolest things I have seen in a while.  It sits on the table and holds your purse so that it doesn't have to be on the floor or behind your chair.  Quite an interesting little invention, and they are pretty as well.

Then I bought the girls new dresses, there is something in the Mandarin style clothing that I truly love on my girls.  These dresses are very feminine but very girly at the same time.  Kiya picked out the colour she liked and Mylee didn't get a choice, the one I picked for her is just elegant.  I can't wait for them to wear them.

Then as we went along we were starting to get thirsty and I had a pineapple drink that was made from pineapple pieces and green tea.  It was quite refreshing and Kiya enjoyed the pineapple pieces when all the juice was gone.

I also found a Christmas/Birthday present to order for the girls and have to go back without them so I can order them in time.  And then we went over to Market Village.  Now I have only been in Market Village at night for Karoke so this was a new adventure for me.  I ended up getting the girls their lunch bag stuff for next year, as both will be in school for lunch (insert teary eyes here) and some fun kitchen stuff for me to play with.  Then a trip to the Chinese grocery store for some greens and such for me.

I need to go back there though, they have a store in there that has nail stickers galore and I want to go have a look without a tired Mylee whining she wants to go home.

It was another great adventure and hopefully we can do it again.  Getting out in the summer is difficult enough but with good friends and interesting adventures we seem to have a lot of fun!
Thanks again Selena, can't wait for the next one!

Cousins

It is that time of year again, where school is out and summer school starts just a little later than it should.  So we had visitors for a couple of days.  Maggie and Molly came over to play for a couple hours each day last week.  And one of the days I decided to have some fun, this is what happens when the house is clean and I don't want them to make a mess in it as all children do.

So out popped the nail polish and make up.  My girls already had their nails done so I did Maggie and Molly's nails and then I went down the line for make up.  When all these girls hit about 15-16 we are in big trouble.

Bunch of pretty girls without the make up, but some times it is just fun to play dress up. And it was entertaining for me for an hour.

A day out with Auntie Selena

Our day started with brunch at Cora's and boy was it yummy.  Kiya was first one finished with her plate of eggs and bacon and then she picked at my homefries.  Mylee dawdled as always and ate 1/4 of her food but she had also eaten before we left so I couldn't expect much.

Then we ended up at Menchies, we had never been but this will not be our last visit.  What an interesting place, and if you haven't been then walk into one you will be pleasantly surprised.

And yes of course when taking a picture my children have to be weird.  Mylee decided on the smurf frozen yogurt and fruit to accompany her treat.  I don't think we could fit any more sour keys and candies into Kiya's bowl of yogurt but she sure did try.  I was way too full from brunch to consider eating any yogurt so I enjoyed watching the girls enjoy theirs.

Kiya decided to add our name to the blackboard that day to commemorate our first visit.  I would highly recommend a visit to Menchies, but bring an appetite your frozen yogurt can get quite filling.

Then it was off to the nail salon.  Our appointment was for 2pm and we got there just in time.  While Kiya poured over the books of designs for her nails, Mylee sat in the chair proudly getting her nails done.  She can be such a little diva when she wants to be, enjoying the pampering and being a "big lady".  It is nice to see her enjoy some of this stuff as there are times throughout the day when I wonder if she is a girlie girl or not.

Kiya decided on a really pretty design for her nails that was all sparkle based.  It was similar to a French tip but the sparkles also trailed down her finger tips.  It was really pretty.  The girls took good care of my kids and I was thoroughly impressed.  Not many places will indulge children but thanks to Auntie Selena we have found somewhere wonderful.

And then for the first time I let someone else paint my nails.  Holy cow did the anxiety ever creep up.  For those of you who don't know, my feet are incredibly sensitive and if you go to touch them, my automatic reaction is to kick.  I have to be really careful with my kids because they think they are funny when they pretend to touch mommy's feet.

We had an amazing day and are sure to do it again.  I am greatful my kids can behave and enjoy this kind of thing and that I get a chance to experience this with them.  Thanks Selena for a wonderful day!!!

Fireworks

Every year for Canada Day we venture out to see the fireworks.  There is something magical about these blasts of colour through the sky, and whether you are at Ashbridges Bay or Disney's Magical Kingdom, the fireworks will always lead back to your childhood and how awe inspired you were.

The girls and I always watch for the prettiest or biggest or brightest ones and you will often hear us say "oh that one is my favourite", each firework display takes on its own dimensions.  I remember as an older kid when Benson & Hedges put on their Symphony of Lights, and to this day as the fireworks go off I can hear the music behind it in my head.  It is truly another art form to keep the public engaged in each display.

This year we went up to Milliken Park and as always we were not disappointed.  The fireworks seemed to last forever, when in truth they were about 20 minutes.  But they were beautiful, and we were impressed again!

Canada Day!!!

Happy Canada Day

Confidence

What is a wedding without kids taking over?  Our family has quite a few performers in it and they are pretty good at what they do.  After many of the guests went home, the kids took over the microphone and started singing some songs.

It was here that I noticed a distinct change in Kiya.  Something has happened this year that has caused Kiya to become more confident in who she is.  And quite frankly it shocked me, I think it shocked my niece too lol.  The kids were standing at the front of the buffet table, all eyes on them and they started singing a song, something about "in my castle glowing" ( I don't know who it is) and my niece didn't remember the words to one part in the song, the part that shocked me was that Kiya pulled the mic out of her hand and started singing that part of the song.  The rest was a blur because I couldn't pull my mouth off the floor fast enough.  This is different behaviour for Kiya, normally she is the shy one but it seems someone is coming out of her shell.

Then I come back from the lou and Mylee is talking to the DJ, I thought she was requesting a song but next thing you know I am being asked if Mylee can read.  Well she can, but she is only 5 and sounding out the big words still gives her some trouble.  Well within the next minute she was up on a chair, microphone in hand singing Call Me Maybe, and she did so well.  There was one part where brutal honesty came through "I don't know this part" had everyone in either smiles or small giggles.  What surprised me was she asked for it all by herself.  She took the intiative to go and ask, then with a small bit of coaching from her cousin got through the entire song.

My girls always impress me, but watching them Saturday night had me glowing with pride. I love when my kids do things for themselves in a positive way, it makes the world seem like a brighter place.

Dave's Wedding

What a beautiful day for a wedding.  Our friend David and Jogie got married on Saturday and we partied all night long.

And remember those oodles of flowers....

The Argo's Game

Well the day finally arrived!!!

Back in May I purchased Argo tickets for my Mother's day present.  A set of 4 so that it could be a family event.  And finally the day arrived.

The girls were so excited, and I was too.  Darryl is not a CFL fan, never has been but was gracious enough to come along to make me happy.

And I got spoiled, Darryl bought me an Argo's jersey to commemorate the day.  Now I just have to pick up the girl's t-shirts that we were supposed to pick up from our ticket sales.

More goodbyes

Thursday was a very emotional day for me, and Mylee.

Not only did we have to say goodbye for another school year, but some of our teachers are leaving to pursue better opportunities next year.

Our Vice Principal is leaving.  This was wonderful news and cause to celebrate.  She is leaving to spend time with her family, something she has been working on for 4 years.  It is bittersweet for me as she was the one who helped me along in the beginning, giving me both a reference and a push in the direction I seem to be going in right now.  She will be missed, but never forgotten.

Our Librarian is leaving to open a new library in a brand new school.  This woman extended herself so much for our family taking time to track down a list of books for Kiya to read over the summer that she thought she would enjoy.  Anytime I had a question about a certain book she was right there to answer it.  My heart breaks that she is leaving us, but I am so happy for her as this opportunity is something she has never experienced before.  And of course we wish her the best forever!

One of the teachers that I wished Kiya could have had.  This gentleman said hello to me every morning and was so kind every time you talked to him. He is going to a great school but will be missed.  Any child you ask, this teacher is one of the best.  We wish him well always.

And then there are the grads.  I knew way too many this year, and saying goodbye and best wishes was extremely difficult.  A lot of the grads this year were helpers in Kiya's kindergarten class and even to this day say hello to her when they cross paths.  Many of these kids will be horribly missed because they have such big hearts.

Teacher's gifts

Every year I give something special to the teachers that teach my children.  At their school they don't only have one teacher but several.  There are teachers who help with gym, library, esl, French, just about everything.  And there are some teachers that have looked out for my girls throughout the year and checked in with them to make sure they were adjusting well.

I am very blessed to have these people in mine and my child's lives.  I can go over to the school and ask for help in homework or anything in general and they will do their best to help out.  And it isn't only one.  I walk in with a math problem and Kiya's teacher has left for the day, I have 4 teachers who will help me out.

That is why instead of one teacher gift, I make something for each teacher in the school.  Though it is just a little trinket of appreciation it is very welcomed.  So this year I got the idea from Pinterest.

It reads "We need s'more teachers like you".

I also put a card on the table that expresses our thanks for another wonderful year.  And this year has been wonderful.  I never knew how much fun being in the classroom, on field trips and accompanying children to sporting events could actually be.  I hope next year I am just as fortunate!!!

The Horrible Wednesday

Well it arrived, the day I was dreading all month.

For the last 4 months I have been working in a school not far from home doing lunch supervision.  I knew almost all the kid's names assigned to me, and some of them would get very upset if I wasn't there on my assigned days.

Last Wednesday I had to say goodbye to these children and it broke my heart.  I would miss my little friends and some of them will even miss me.  The lunch supervisors there were very sad to see me go, but wished me all the best.

And then it was time to say goodbye to the administration.  It came as a shock to the receptionist who I always made smile, and I was asked to keep in contact with the VP and Principal because they would love to work with me again.  I even said goodbye to the custodian because he always made me feel at home.

So after some blubbering and some hugs I was out the door saying goodbye to my new friends and moving forward towards another.  I wish these people the best in life because they treated me like gold.  They accommodated me in so many ways and I will be forever greatful.  I truly hope our paths cross again.

Tuesday

A morning of rain cancelled Kiya's class trip to Milliken park but her teacher decided to let them have fun and games instead, she whispered she suspected there would be a class mutiny if she assigned work, and well, knowing the group she has ....she was absolutely right.

So instead of volunteering to go to the park that day, I decided to go home and work on the house a bit trying to get it tidied and organized for the next couple of days chaos.

I made up Kiya's fruit potluck dish, we were trying for healthy snacks and with the heat baking just wasn't in the cards.  And that afternoon I took over her class gift.

My Auntie Nikki gave me the idea when she did one for one of my cousin's class birthdays.  And I can report that the kids loved it.  I mean who doesn't love something on a stick.  The good news, another teacher was able to accompany her teacher and they got to Milliken in the afternoon anyway.

Oodles of Flowers

Last Saturday I spent most of the day at my mom's house making flowers for a wedding cake.  When the boys decided they were going out I headed down to my aunt's and made some there too while the girls played with their cousins.

There we were, Sue and I, cutting, veining and stemming gumpaste flowers until about 2am.  We got quite a few done and I was so proud of Sue that she was able to keep up with me.

Then all 4 girls got involved and started playing with the gumpaste.  Between a platypus, a snake, an almost chuwawa and a bunch of other fun, the girls then started to wear the gumpaste.  We had goatees and mustaches and beards and all.  It was quite a fun adventure, and poor Sue was trying to keep up with all the "take my picture and look at mes".

Mylee was out at about 11pm, but Kiya was still up when Daddy walked through the door.  So after packing up the craziness, we headed home.  It was a great night.

The Tall Ships

On June 23rd, our family decided to go down to Harbourfront to look at the tall ships.  We had such an amazing adventure and I am so proud of Kiya and Mylee.  Not only did they use their manners, but they walked the full 6km walk and got on the bus ready for home.  This may not seem important to some, but we are a spoiled family, we don't even walk to the store anymore.

So while we were down there, we saw the water dogs, and then participated in some fun historical stuff that was laid out by Parks Canada.  Kiya answered a grade 9 history question and Mylee sang along with some of the  working songs on the ships.  We picked up the coins from the Royal Canadian Mint and learned some special things about the war of 1812.

Though we didn't get to go on the tall ships we did drive by them on another boat and got to see them up close.  It was a great day, and of course I got some sun but was a good girl and wore my hat all day.

On the way home we stopped at McDonald's for dinner and then walked home from Woodside, it was then that we got caught in the thunderstorm.  The best part was, we were singing and dancing in the rain and were full of giggles.  Then after a nice warm shower we snuggled in for a movie and popcorn.

The ROM

My adventure today involved accompanying Kiya's class to the ROM for the medival studies tour.  If I am not mistaken this is the only tour I haven't been on.  I was so impressed at the kids' knowledge and the teacher was just a hoot.  She kept trying to egg on the answers because she knew she taught all the stuff.

Some interesting things I saw:
1. a rosary bead with a beautiful woman on one side and a skull on the other side.  It was meant to show how fragile life is.  Being made of ivory the detail was just exquisite.

2. another piece of ivory carved to show the virgin Mary suckling baby Jesus.  After some interesting conversations about breastfeeding in public, this carving definitely made me smile.

3. the gemstone exhibit is to die for.  The star of lanka is so beautiful it is hard to believe it isn't something just made.

4. I also learned that a child is first taught to read the Qaran before they are taught what it means.  This is a new concept to me, as with my learning I have always thought that you need to know what a word is translated too before you can read it in full context.

5. that Chinese Daoists used bamboo stalks to view the stars and planets.

Now I have a question for you.  In all religions, or at least those depicted in ancient times, why is the planet Mars always seen as a hostile, warmongering celestial being/God?  Yes it is red, but because something is red does it always have to be associated with war?

Updated Pics

Noticed that I haven't posted many pictures of Kiya and Mylee lately so here are the more recent ones.  These were taken at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo on May long weekend.

Michael and Becky's Wedding

This weekend we were fortunate to join in Michael and Becky's wedding celebrations.  It was a truly intimate affair held at the Auberge du Pommier.  What a beautiful place.  It is a quiet little restaurant in North York and the atmosphere is incredible.

Dressing up is one of my favourite things to do, Darryl hates it, but he always looks sharp when dressed to the nines.

We had an amazing time and we wish the best for the happy couple!

And the winner is....

At the end of the assembly, they drew the prizes for the fundraiser.  You could feel the excitement emanating around the room and the kids could hardly sit still.

As the prizes were doled out and each smiling face came up to collect it I couldn't help but smile with them and cheer as loudly as they were.

Kiya won an hour in the school gym for her and 11 friends, which is scheduled for this Friday.  Mylee came away disappointed but she is still little and doesn't truly understand the idea of a fundraiser.

And then the moment the whole school was waiting for, even the teachers were holding their breaths, the drawing for the new bike.  For every $60 the student had raised they got one ticket for the draw for the bike.  So as a result both girls got 1 ticket each.  This was a beautiful brand new red bike from donated from Tim Hortons. The ultimate prize for a summer full of fun.

So the VP calls up one of my favourite people at the school and she swirls the tickets and then another teacher shakes the treasure chest, out pops that little yellow ticket.  She hands it to the VP and she finds my eye across the way and smiles.  And the winner is.....KIYA

I am not sure you remember a post earlier about new bikes for the kids, but in March they both got brand new bikes.  A discussion was held in the house between me and the girls about what we would do if we won the bike. Kiya came up with ideas and well Mylee didn't really care, but in the end we all realized that the new bike wouldn't fit in our space.  Our ideas were quite inventive too.

So prior to winning I had mentioned to the VP that if we won the bike we would be donating it back to the school for another fundraiser if they were short on this one.  And there Kiya sat not wanting to claim the bike as her own because she knew it wasn't hers.  I walked over and told her to get up and go and tell the VP what she wanted to do.  She was a little embarrassed with all her friends cheering and smiling and screaming in her ear.  The VP met her half way and Kiya hugged her and said thank you but I want to donate the bike back.

The VP took Kiya's hand and led her to the stage area and wrapped her arm around her.  Boys and girls Kiya has just told me something that I would like to share with you.  Kiya's family is very lucky, Kiya and her sister were bought brand new bikes earlier in the year and she has some news for you as to what she wants to do with the bike.  "Kiya, what do you want to do with the bike?"  and clear as a bell in the microphone Kiya says " I want to donate it back to the school so someone else can have a new bike".  My heart leapt with pride and I could see that Kiya felt really good about this decision too.  So in her hand went and out popped the next yellow ticket....the VP leads up with who's class and then Kiya says into the microphone "Isaiah".  Well this kid was quite surprised and on the way up to the stage he gave Kiya a high five/hug five type thing, I don't know what it is called but her daddy does it with his friends.  When asked how she felt about it by her teacher, Kiya said I felt like I had good karma, I did something to make someone else's life happier and it makes me feel good in my heart.

Friendship and Sharing

Last month the girls were trying to raise money for their school for a set of computers.  With their nicest voices they asked their family and with the tiniest bit of help from me and Darryl the girls were able to raise $90 each.

As a bonus to raising so much money their names got put into a draw for some prizes, for each $10 you raised you got a ticket to put in for the draw.  So Mylee separated her tickets into 3 groups of 3 and choose the skating lessons, miniature golf and a huge arts and craft basket.  Kiya's was a mystery because we never really discussed it.  However, I told her to pick things that won't stick around and that maybe we can use as a family or things she could use for school.

So off to the assembly I went.  The theme for this month was friendship and sharing, two of my favourite things.  I heard the grade ones sing a great song on how they learned to share, then the other grade one class taught us about rhythm with the help of the librarian, who is an absolute doll and I am so glad I have met her.

A good deal of the assembly talked about making a difference in the world, change for the better, and what just one person can do to make someone's life a little easier or a little better.  Teachers talked about an organization called "A walk in her shoes", another set talked about the food bank and some of their contributions have changed things for families, then the student council got up and talked about the organization "because I am a girl" and I was almost in tears.

I think my favourite part of the assembly was when the vice principal got up and told the story about her son being born on an airplane a month ahead of schedule.  She talked about spending time in the hospital and seeing so many people affected by so many things.  She explained to the kids that she is a very busy lady, she works at the school, raises 2 boys and still has things to do for family and friends, so she told them there is one thing that she did best.  "I grow my hair"  were her exact words.  And she got up on the stage with 3 students and we watched as a hairdresser, 2 moms and a teacher cut these girls' hair.  There was a substancial piece cut from all the girls, between 8-10 inches, and she then explained that the hair would go to an organization called Locks of Love, a place that collects the hair for it to be turned into wigs.  I was crying at this point, thinking how these 3 girls who's hair was close to their bottoms cut their hair and donated it to someone who really needs it.

I walked away from this with a totally different take on what the school does.  I always knew they helped children be the best person they could be, but to have them think that they are but one wheel in a multitude of cogs is something that many consider.

Mylee's Dress up Day

So after a stressful day at school I decided to do something totally girly with Mylee.  Yep, let her play in my make up.  I also did her nails and made us both feel really pretty.  Sometimes you just need to be girly and have those "Look at Me" days.

We might be in big trouble come the teenage years.
